A Holy celebration, that calls Fiesta Grande. One sight as a perfectible photographic essay

By Demian Chávez. (Traducción al inglés Juan Carlos Romo y López Guerrero).

When I was a Little boy, I has conciseness about the real meaning of a lot of celebrations in my neighborhood, many of them are very important for our Mexican faith, a rich mixture between religious and paganism celebrations for me, my brother, my sister and my friends; the best ones were, and now on to, a particular Christmas parties, that calls Posadas, because, you can hit the “piñata” and gift, and obtain candies.

The marvelous mixture between colors, sounds, and odors as environmental sources for the dancers of ancient Mexican dances, and mystic aspects to evolve everything, including myself, are the most important elements of La Fiesta Grande de la Santa Cruz, (a particular celebration in the middle of the country, in the Querétaro state, that realizes from September 12 to September 14), that influence mi job as photojournalist, living from inside this kind of celebration.

La Fiesta Grande, it´s a very important part of my childhood, and adolescent phase of life, at the point to grew up inside of me, as an adult and professional photographer, who can include this kind of meanings in my own discursive narration with images, photographic images.

History, is a construction, from many possibilities, that reality offer to us. At the end, all of them are micro-histories, growing up together, but in different planes of that reality. Each year, La Fiesta offers some different elements, with the same meaning, also a different meaning too. It´s no possible to talk about La Fiesta Grande de la Santa Cruz, in only one history, because the hole celebration offers to us, many experiences, with a such of elements and interpretations, through the lenses of our particular culture and imagination. New dresses with different scales of colors; the fragrance and odors from incense; sounds from the seashells, animal bones, as an elegant part as a part of a warrior Mexican suit; the sounds of Huehuetl and Teponashtli, two rhythmic and percussion elements from ancient Mexican music. Many of them from younger to older women and men, offer her and him word, like a promise to give everything that they can offer to Conchero community, creating strongest ties around all of them.

Being at Fiesta Grande celebration, is one of the powerful reasons to feel the real meaning of a queretanity, understand the deepest reasons of that can be. In fact, this is a real attitude to embrace, who want to live in this land, without reclamation of any kind. Watch and live the Fiesta Grande is an opportunity to make a selfie, with the most impressive Conchero dancer, and be an active participant at each event during hole four celebrations days, in one of the Barrios, like La Cruz, or San Francisquito, which are so close one from each other, and near to Downtown. Celebration began with the Jolgorio del Gallo (incoming of the big rooster); take a visit of Cuarteles and Oratorios, take a deep breath from different vegetable resins, that became from an incense burner. Some meanings of this celebration, are a mixture of different concepts, from Christianity and paganism, typically Mexicans, but not only from our country, and that made it, from a rich and diversity of Mexican culture, to make this as a real big celebration.

As a photographer, this event offers search, and find different images, that synthetize a very clear semantic and semiotic discourse, that no easy to do it; anyway, each year, offers to me, and many more, a challenge, a real challenge, to rewrite a single meaning, with images. We cannot take a separation from the very moment of Click!, and their real meaning, between our interpretation and the powerful interpretation of Conchero community, revalorized from meanings from colors, and forms, sounds and smells. Each one situation, has a different colorimetry, that gives a different opportunity, to take and catch the moment, moving forward to the human being, that we call photojournalist, or simply, photographer, that grew up, and look different from yesterday, this event, that occurs right in front their eyes, transforms photographer’s way to see, and transforms our way to look the world.

These new moods to see, transform the interpretation of reality, and history; transform each photographer from an eventual visitor, to a compulsive and reiterative one.

This collection, try to give to a new and different sight, from a clise, offers to any one, some perfect clues, from Mexican nationality, their symbols, and their deepest meanings.

When a was a little child, at the age of six years old, i heard for the first time in my life, these expression “Él es Dios” (He is God), and this one, has no meaning for me, maybe because i´m a child, perhaps, because was not a real part of a Conchero Community, and I have not elements historic and cultural, that give to me essential bases for understanding, this deepest and ritualistic expression. Another aspect to try to understand the meaning of that expression, it´s the sound of many drummers takes a part in a celebration, near the Independence Day, in the streets so close to Santa Cruz church; that reminds to many of who grew up, near to Barrio of San Francisquito, the burning market of La Cruz, between streets of Reforma, Doctor Lucio, Gutierrez Nájera in downtown, a few years ago.

Valentin F. Frías, who was an important historic researcher, wrote these lines, to give to us an explanation about the name of Querétaro, in him own book Traditions and Legends from Querétaro, México, and he talk about a victory in a war, between spaniers soldiers and Chichimeca warriors, an ancient and brave tribe in the meddle of México, who confront one to each other in 25 of July of 1531, at Loma de Sangremal, a very important and geographical place near to downtown in Querétaro city. This Spanish victory, was possible, with a little help from heaven, like a tradition brings to us.

A divine intervention, to help to win to Spanish army, over Chichimeca warriors grows up, when they felt lost, and tired, and them pray, to obtain a good help, and they look James the Apostle, then the Chichimecas, look at this miracle, from heaven, in the sky, they surrender to Spanish soldiers, and all of them, call him, He is God” accepted a Holy presence in that field.

This historic legend, transforms in tradition, gave to each and every one of queretanians, a reason to celebrate each year in September 13, an exaltation of Holy Cross; a real opportunity to Danzante´s Tables (this is another possibility to call any kind of Conchero warriors, organized around one of them, that they call General, to dance near the Chapell of La Cruz; a big place, to see, this rich mixture of traditions, from both cultures, that mix from yesterday from today. This celebration began, with reception at the Conchero warrior’s barracks; a big rooster made with different materials, that arrives with a man, who represents a Christian faith (a priest), at September 12, near to midnight. At that moment began a real celebration with gifts, chants, music, and dances to honored to the Lord (Christ the son of God), trough that day, until September 15. During these days, my mother dance with an insatiable and inextinguishable fervor to her devotion.

Querétaro, grows up, and transform, from agricultural place to live in, in to an industrial, Aerospatiale, and mechanical and automotive landmark across the country, with a look through the early years of XXI century . During a 20 years lapse, a human exodus from different places around Querétaro, explodes the cities of Querétaro and San Juan del Rio, duplicating the population and services for all of them. This new queretanians, need to know and understand all the ancient traditions, had to know the meaning of each and every one of elements that are in official graphic (Escudo?), and what is the relation between that graphic elements and history of foundation of our noble and loyalty Santiago de Querétaro, City.

For me, it’s very pretty important, offer to the new queretanians, a profuse and deep point of view, of our historic legacy, trying to give them an approach to our roots, cultural behavior, from this photographic view, trying to understand and embrace these traditions in this new land, this new home, with an historic compromise.
